11:45 a.m. -12:25 p.m.
Speaker: Kenneth Oestreich, Director of Marketing for Cassatt

Topic: Lights on, Nobody Home? Strategies To Actively Manage IT Power

Overview:

No one ever asks why some servers are on 24x7 – even when many sit idle much of the day (consuming as much as 50% of their fully-loaded power) wasting your power. Active power management is available that intelligently identifies idle and/or low-priority servers, and gracefully tailors their power status, compute capacity and/or shifts entire compute loads.  Organizations with existing efficient or consolidated hardware also benefit, since efficient operation complements efficient equipment.  With Active power management, you’ll save massive power while pleasing both IT Operations and Facilities staffs.

1:30 p.m. -2:10 p.m.
Speaker: Bruce Myatt, EYP Mission Critical Facilities

Topic: Cutting Edge Cooling Strategies to Dramatically Reduce Data Center Energy Cost

Overview:

The popular data center “hot aisle/cold aisle” layout has proven to be only the first step toward a much superior solution that will someday become the norm for data center air flow controls. Predictable server inlet temperatures, elevated supply air temperatures, and newly available “free cooling” opportunities can allow operators to substantially turn down their mechanical plants and dramatically reduce their operating costs. Newly published data on the effects of particulate and humidity intrusion in air side economizers has shown that outside air can be used with much greater success than previously believed possible. Bay Area data centers are just beginning to demonstrate the success of these new controls and are proving that the “Return on Investment” for these changes is something that you must consider for your facilities, too.

11:45 a.m. -12:25 p.m.
Speaker: Andy Broer, IT/Data Center Manager for Cisco

Topic: The Lie of Linux

Overview:

Everywhere you turn marketing is telling you their products can save your data center's power and cooling by using virtualization technologies, but your data center is still overheating and out of power? Why? Their products *can* save you power and cooling. So what gives? Aha! There's a catch! Business culture precludes us from reducing IT spending from quarter to quarter to reap those power and cooling rewards. Business computing demand continues to fuel the heat inside the data centers of today. This must attend presentation will cover the barriers and pitfalls of virtualization.
